The Fever- They make me want to live the glamorous life....
Some time in the middle of last March I was sitting at the bar in a Marriott in Syracuse, NY with my entire family. As I sipped my ironic Shirley Temple my cell phone rang and a very enthusiastic Husky Gentleman (www.huskygentleman.blogspot.com) shrieked, "Dulce! Guess what!? I just saw a GREAT show!" He continued on excitedly about this tremendous band he had just caught in NYC...They were called The Fever and perhaps the coolest thing about them was they covered Sheila E's "Glamorous Life" and they did it well!
Peter's Husky fervor for The Fever immediately rubbed off on me and I dreamed of the day when I would get to hear their keyboard laden harmonies. That day came in July when The Fever rolled into Rosebud alongside Hot Hot Heat and The Moving Units. I sang along to all their songs and purchased their Ep on disc and vinyl (ok, fine I'm a dork. I admit it). Exhilarated by their live show I was first in line to see them again when they bounced into the Upstage with Pittsburgh's The Claymores and The Black Tie Revue.
The Fever are an explosion of energy, movement, and smashing good looks topped off with quirky, guttural dance beats. They have yet again secured their spot as "cool dudes" when they covered Outkast's hit "Hey Ya" at a New Year's Eve show at Don Hill's in NYC. (Check it out... http://www.divestar.org/shows/fever01-01-04/HeyYa.mpg)
I recommend checking out The Fever's 2003 Ep "Pink on Pink" and I really am looking forward to a full-length in the not so distant future....don't worry... I will keep you posted.

The Star Spangles - Bazooka!
--- I live for speed---
I think I actually live for the Star Spangles and their catchy, gritty, sweet and tangy rock n' roll tunes. I caught these fellas opening up for the Dictators at CBGB's on one very snowy night in early December. Earlier that day I had decided to make my pilgrimage to CBGB's to catch the Dictator's 30th reunion show-- what I didn't know was that I would leave CBGB's with a new vision of modern punk rock n' roll heroes- the Star Spangles.
Less than a week later I caught them again at 31st Pub with my boys from the Black Tie Revue as the opening act. So I can say for certain these boys know how to put on a show. Even with a sparse audience their enthusiasm for their music was prevalent banging out Johnny Thunders style hits like pros.
Their album Bazooka! is just a good as their live performances. Each song a sing-along-able throw back to the late 1970's punk movement--in the best possible way. They got the look and they got the love now you have to kick yourself for missing their Pittsburgh show (and I know you missed it cause I was there).
Check out the songs:
I Live for Speed
Science Fiction, Science Fact
Which One of the Two of Us is Gonna Burn This House Down
Stay Away From Me
p.s. I have officially amended my Best of 2003 List: Number nine is now The Star Spangles- Bazooka! and Outkast moves to number 10.

Take a deep breath, let your mind choke, spit it out.....
discovering the rock inside the 'burgh
I have spent a lot of time being irritated that I don't live in New York City or somewhere where good bands tend to flourish... until the other day it hit me.... Right now Pittsburgh is producing some great fucking bands. I mean everyone knows with the good old garage rock revival the Modey Lemon became supercool but beyond them I felt like Pittsburgh was a desolate wasteland of washed up punk rock bands and uninventive indie rockers......
but now.... I have been proven wrong (and boy am I glad I have)
With bands like Camera (www.thisiscamera.com), The Wynkataug Monks (www.wmonks.com), Shade (www.shaderocks.com) and The Black Tie Revue (www.blacktierevue.com) Pittsburgh has been SAVED.
(i realize that by saying this i am acting like one of those scenester people i can't really stand but i think these guy have undeniable talent and therefore i must scarafice myself to prove it to the world)
These boys always draw a crowd, get girls to dance, and actually have GOOD songs. It's just what I always wanted in my city. I am just so pleased to see this.... It gives me something to be excited about and it lets me go see a good show in MY TOWN a lot more often.
Everyone check these kids out.... NOW. You won't be sorry.

The White Stripes Wednesday November 26, 2003 AJ Palumbo Theatre
Ahhh yes... The good old White Stripes. I thought they would never make it to the 'burgh but they sure did. I decided to dish out the 30 bones to catch them last August but they decided to break their hands and feet and hearts and whatever else and well the show was postponed till the night before thanksgiving. In my attempt to arrive fashionably late I completely missed Whirlwind Heat who opened the show.
Palumbo is one of my least favorite venues in this town because unless you are right up front or on the floor the acoustics are horrendous and ya can't hear anything. Clearly I was on the floor standing behind the tallest person in the world (this usually happens to me at shows). Basically the show was nearly sold out and every kind of person was present. My favorite people are the ones who do the fist pump to songs like "Hotel Yorba" but at least they were having fun, right?
So those two crazy kids banged out a few hits including "Seven Nation Army," "Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground," and "You're Pretty Good Looking(For a Girl)" but they also played many of their less known songs which we're amazing too. The audience didn't know what to make of it when the show ended and they had to leave without hearing "Fell in Love With a Girl" and it was then I realized that I have this weird respect for bands that don't play their biggest radio hit. It's kinda like saying "fuck you dude ... we have more than one album!" and it makes me laugh.
In the end I was pleased I made it to the show and finally saw these kids live. I suggest that you run along and go see them too. You'll like it....I promise.
